MAHART has served Hungary since 1846 — through empires, floods, wars and peace. Founded as the country's first passenger shipping company, it survived the darkest decades of the twentieth century and re-emerged as MAHART PassNave in 1994. Today we still cast off every day from Dock 5, Vigadó tér, exactly where our steamships did a hundred and seventy-eight years ago.
The first Hungarian shipping company
MAHART's earliest ancestor launches on the Danube in the Habsburg era, carrying grain, coal and passengers between Vienna and Belgrade.
Golden age of paddle steamers
Dozens of paddle wheelers connect Budapest with Vienna, Bratislava, Mohács and the Danube Bend.
MAHART founded
Post-war reorganisation gives the country a single national shipping line: Magyar Hajózási Rt. — MAHART.
PassNave born
MAHART PassNave Kft. is founded to run the passenger fleet. Focus shifts from freight to sightseeing and river tourism.

The Hungarian state becomes majority owner again, securing decades more of Danube passenger service.
